In times of ecological transformation, critical and strategic minerals are at the center of debates around the world. Moreover, the Critical and Strategic Minerals International Seminar, organized by IBRAM will cover, in a two-day immersion, an extensive range of topics to understand the role of these minerals in the global energy transition.
An assessment of existing or announced energy policies suggests that the world is currently on track to double its mineral resource needs for renewable energy technologies. In addition, a joint effort to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement would mean quadrupling the demand for mineral inputs for these technologies by 2040. An even faster transition, to reach zero emissions globally by 2050, would require six times more mineral inputs in 2040 than today.
What to expect from the event:
Throughout the Seminar, participants will have access to a comprehensive overview of the CSMs agenda, exploring its impact on the energy transition in Brazil and the world. The challenges and opportunities faced by the mineral sector in the face of the new energy paradigm will be discussed. The event will also pay special attention to the circular economy as a fundamental strategy for sustainability, going beyond mineral extraction and promoting an integrated and complex vision of the energy transition.
The focus will be on the geopolitical dimensions and international policies that shape the CSMs scenario. Furthermore, the importance of policies in both the Global North and Global South countries will be highlighted, aiming to ensure equitable supply and a globally fair transition. Other crucial topics will include the challenges and opportunities of decarbonization routes for industry, dialogues on the new industrial policy for Brazil, socio-environmental considerations related to the exploration of CSMs and the potential of these minerals in the Americas.
The event will also feature the presentation of a white paper prepared by IBRAM, providing in-depth debates and collecting valuable contributions from experts, with a view to improving national policies related to CSMs.
